Have you ever stopped to consider the condition of your walkers or running shoes? Most running shoes fatigue between 500 & 800kms. They might look like they have plenty of wear left and might even feel nice and soft, but if they have fatigued it is the equivalent of running bare feet on asphalt!
An indicator of fatigue is that the midsole is really soft when you squeeze at the sides of the heel. You could reasonably assume the shoe is past it if you have worn through the outersole and started to wear the foam midsole. Deformation of the shoe is an indication that you are in the incorrect shoe and that the shoe has lost its stability. To check this, put the shoe on a flat surface and view it from behind looking for obvious distortion. In some cases the upper will lean in and in others it will lean out.
