Arthrosamid®
Arthrosamid is an innovative and novel type of injection treatment used to treat knee arthritis. Arthrosamid acts within the knee to help cushion the joint, reduce pain and decrease stiffness to improve knee function.
It integrates with the knee joint lining (synovium) to improve lubrication and protect the joint.
Arthrosamid is a non-biodegradable hydrogel injection consisting of 97.5% water with a 2.5% cross-linked polyacrylamide backbone and has been used for a variety of medical indications over the last 20 years.
Currently Arthrosamid® is only available in Australia via application to Canberra (TGA).

How is Arthrosamid® administered?
Before treatment with Arthrosamid®, you will have a local anaesthetic to numb the area around your knee. You should also be given antibiotics ahead of this to protect you from any potential risk of infection.
Your knee is cleaned prior to treatment. Arthrosamid® is then singularly injected into your knee’s synovial cavity. This is sometimes performed with the help of ultrasound. The needle is then removed and a bandaid is placed over the injection site.
Arthrosamid® distributes within the synovial fluid and begins to stick to and mesh with the synovial tissue.

Indications, Patient Group and Usage
Arthrosamid® is intended to be used for symptomatic treatment of adult patients with knee osteoarthritis
Contraindications
Arthrosamid® should not be injected:
- If an active skin disease or infection is present at or near the injection site.
- If the joint is infected or severely inflamed.
- If the patient has previously received treatment with a different non-absorbable injectable/implant.
- If the patient has received a knee replacement or has any foreign material in the knee.
- If the patient has undergone knee arthroscopy within the last six months.
- In haemophilia patients or in patients in uncontrolled anti-coagulant treatment.
Treatment with Arthrosamid® may not be suitable for everyone.

Can I drive after an Arthrosamid injection?Yes, most patients can drive shortly after the procedure. However, if you experience discomfort or swelling it’s best to wait until symptoms resolve.

Does Arthrosamid work for everyone?Arthrosamid is effective for many patients, but individual responses vary. It is not recommended for patients with inflammatory arthritis (Rheumatoid Arthritis, Psoriatic Arthritis or Gout).

Who is eligible for Arthrosamid?If you’re an adult with knee osteoarthritis who hasn’t found relief from other treatments, you may be a good candidate.

Is Arthrosamid the same as hyaluronic acid?No, Arthrosamid is a hydrogel designed for long-term pain relief, whereas hyaluronic acid offers temporary lubrication.

What is the aftercare for Arthrosamid?After your injection, avoid strenuous activities for 48 hours, but light movement is encouraged. Following proper aftercare ensures the best outcomes.

How much does Arthrosamid cost?The cost of an Arthrosamid injection is $4,500 per knee. This is not claimable on Medicare or private health insurance.

How long does an Arthrosamid injection procedure take?The procedure is quick, typically lasting about 30-45 minutes from start to finish, including consultation, preparation and aftercare instructions. Patients can usually resume light activities the same day. Patients are asked to take antibiotics provided by the doctor 1-6 hours before the injection to minimise the risk of infection.

How soon will I feel relief after an Arthrosamid injection?It takes about 6-8 weeks after the injection for Arthrosamid to integrate with the synovial cells and start reducing knee joint pain and swelling. The hydrogel works gradually to reduce inflammation and improve joint function.

Can I have Arthrosamid if I’ve already had other knee injections?Yes, Arthrosamid can be administered to patients who have previously tried other injections, such as corticosteroids or hyaluronic acid, without satisfactory results. Discuss your medical history with Dr Ibrahim to determine if it’s suitable for you.
